Considerations for your Water Heater Installation in the Greater Baltimore Area
We want to help you make the best choice for you and your family or business. So if you are planning on replacing your water heater or purchasing a water heater for new construction in the Baltimore area, here are some things you’ll want to consider.
Traditional Tank or High Efficiency Tankless Water Heater?
High efficiency tankless water heaters heat water instantly by internal coils. One of the major benefits of a tankless water heater is their energy efficiency. Since they heat water instantly, they only run while you are using water. Instantaneous heating also means the water supply is endless, and since there is no storage tank they are also ideal for small spaces.
The capacity to provide hot water for simultaneous household duties vary for tankless water heaters, and can be somewhat less than traditional tank water heaters. For instance, if you use the shower, laundry and dishwasher simultaneously it could affect the flow rate (gallons per minute). Therefore, they may not be an ideal option for heavy hot water use households. Click here for more information on selecting a tankless water heater.
The initial cost for the tankless water heaters and installation is more, but they have a 20 year life expectancy–twice as long as the life span of traditional storage water heaters. They also require additional maintenance once a year for the sediment to be flushed from the system.
Traditional tank water heaters store hot water in a tank that is kept to temperature. As the stored water is used for laundry, showers or the dishwasher, the supply is depleted and more water is heated to temperature, known as recovery time.
Maintaining the temperature of the stored hot water causes to water heater to run even when hot water is not being used. Yet, this also means there is a good amount of hot water ready for simultaneous household uses (averaging 80 gallons depending on your tank size).
Gas or Electric?
There are two options for fuel for water heaters– gas or electric. If you are replacing an existing water heater, it is usually more cost effective to replace it with the type that was previously installed. If you are installing a water heater for new construction, there is more flexibility and options available.
Gas water heaters require a natural gas line to be run to your house. A well-maintained gas water heater generates low levels of carbon monoxide, but since carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, it is very important to have proper venting and carbon monoxide detectors if you choose gas for your fuel source. A benefit of gas water heaters is that you won’t lose hot water when the electricity goes out. Electric water heaters are the most common and do not require venting.
